Indra brings interoperability to Bogota healthcare centers to centralize patient medical records and improve medical care
Professionals working at the 22 public healthcare centers in the capital city will be able to permanently get real-time and updated information on their patients
The project will improve medical decision-making processes, render treatment and care more agile, prevent the loss of information and repetition of tests, and guarantee data security
This is the first solution in Latin America based on FHIR, HL7's new data exchange standard, and will streamline the interconnection and record-keeping of data integrated in electronic medical records, regardless of the systems of origin

Front-runner global technology and consulting leader Indra has closed a contract with the District Healthcare Secretariat of the Bogota Mayor's Office to implement Mymed Health Data, Indra's comprehensive interoperability solution for the healthcare sector with a view to centralizing medical records of patients on record in Bogota's 22 public hospitals. This pioneering project for Latin America will enhance and render medical services more agile for a population of approximately eight million.
Mymed Health Data is based on FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), the latest data exchange standard developed and promoted by HL7 (Health Level Seven), the organization responsible for some of the most widely used communications protocols in the healthcare industry.
This technology enables the integration of all information regarding a patient's health on record in the systems at different hospitals, clinics and healthcare centers into a single database so that healthcare professionals can call up the information immediately and permanently from an Electronic Medical Record model. Mymed Health Data thus solves the current problem of fragmented information generated and stored by multiple systems from different suppliers. The project also includes the integration of centralized appointment and prescription management for all healthcare centers.
"Our solution lets healthcare organizations create networks for exchanging medical records with very little investment. This is because existing departmental systems need not be replaced or migrated," explains Juan Manuel Martínez, global healthcare product director at Indra.
Another important contribution Mymed Health Data is the integration of a platform enabling the execution of applications from any software developer, so long as they satisfy the international interoperability standard (Smart on FHIR), thus simplifying the secure interaction between external applications and data contained in electronic medical record systems. Professionals thus obtain a rapid and personalized solution to their needs to include advanced tools that enable remote support services, the execution of scientific and statistics-related projects, alerts in case of side-effects or the use of support systems for clinical decisions.
Better decisions and less expenditures
Real-time access to medical reports, tests, medication data, historical medical records or allergies improves decision-making and medical treatments, since professionals get a precise overview of the patient and medical staff can effectively spend more time with the patient because of the consequential reduction in administrative and control tasks. This comprehensive view of the patient's health problems also streamlines the continuity of care in different care environments.
"This precludes the fragmentation or fractioning that many institutions are currently dealing with regarding medical records from external consultations, hospitalization, emergency and outpatient care. Every patient can have a single historical record, which is centrally managed in a single archive that professionals can consult regardless of the treating hospital, healthcare center or clinic," explains Juan Manuel Martínez.
Unequivocal identification is possible thanks to a centralized repository that manages patient personal and contact data to ensure consistent information, precludes duplicated entries and shares the information with all the systems in the organization.
Moreover, the solution enables greater control over medical treatments (reduced duplicate trials and tests, medication follow-ups, etc.), less patient trips to the hospital or healthcare center, and a notable decrease in the use of paper, thus improving efficiency and reducing costs.
More agile appointment and prescription management
The integration of electronic appointment and prescription management processes also entails significant benefits for healthcare centers and patients alike. Indra's solution lets citizens manage their own appointments via a specific portal, improving the control of the demand for scheduled medical treatment and rendering a more agile search for open timeslots in each healthcare center's information systems to enter the appointment in the doctor's agenda. The solution also enables the recovery of pending appointments, provides unified information to personnel at the centers, and registers all unregistered patients in the system.
Mymed Health Data also centrally manages the entire medical prescription process. The system streamlines the patient's access to medication, thus reducing the number trips that chronically ill patients need to make to the healthcare facility. Doctors will also be able to track a patient's pharmacological history, which will be integrated into the electronic medical record. The solution also simplifies a real-time control over pharmaceutical expenses and fraud, and improves stock management.
Lastly, Indra's solution provides integration mechanisms based on International Healthcare Standards safeguarding secure data exchange. It also provides capabilities to make a single-point check on who is accessing information on the patient, what information is being accessed and how, and to limit the visibility of information to preselected profiles. Indra has also mobilized its cybersecurity team available for the project.
