The public registry of Panama entrusts Indra to establish itself as an electronic signature registration and certification authority

Indra will equip the Public Registry of Panama with an advanced electronic certification and signature system that will allow it to regulate this service on a national level and establish itself as an electronic signature registration and certification authority. The technological and consulting firm has been awarded the contract worth $12.3 million and with an execution period of five years.

Indra's system includes Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology that guarantees a secure, efficient and non-repudiable management and exchange of electronic documents. This solution will allow the Public Registry to execute the electronic signature programme within the established time limits, as this is one of the most important –also called Unforgivable--commitments assumed by the current National Government.

As a result, the Public Registry, aside from fulfilling its registration tasks, assumes the great responsibility of establishing itself as an electronic signature registration and certification authority for the Republic of Panama, adopting a supervisory role on a national and international level.

By using electronic signatures and certificates, the operations that are carried out and the electronic documents that are generated will have legal validity. The new platform will improve governmental and private processes. It will also significantly speed up the approval of proceedings, guarantee secure communications and reduce the dependence on paper processes.

The Public Registry's mission is to update, collect, integrate and guarantee the authenticity of documents, title deeds or acts. Registering items provides private property with legal security. The body also collects, preserves and stores the nation's historical documentation.

To roll out the system, Indra relies on the support of the Spanish National Currency and Stamp Factory (FNMT). This entity will participate in preparing the necessary policies, procedures and guides, based on its own experience after having rolled out the Spanish digital certification system (CERES). This system enabled it to be a recognised provider of certification services.

Indra and the Spanish National Currency and Stamp Factory have a collaboration agreement for working together on digital documentation, biometric identification and network security projects.

The new contract awarded in Panama strengthens Indra's position in the country. The company was recently awarded a number of contracts--implementation of security, ship detection, communication and environmental sensor systems--as part of the project for expanding the Panama Canal. On the other hand, Indra assumed responsibility for developing the Marine Passport, which is currently being used for the nation's Maritime Authority.
