Tunisia to double air space control with Indra´s technology

Indra, the premier IT company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe, will improve Tunisia's air traffic surveillance network by doubling its current capacity. The company will also implement an approach control centre that will allow landing in adverse weather conditions in the Island of Djerba, an important tourist location. The contract exceeds euros 10 M.

Tunisia's air navigation providers O.A.C.A. (Office de l’Aviation Civile et des Aéroports) awarded Indra the extension of its air traffic surveillance network with three new radar stations. The stations will be equipped with two primary radars and two secondary radars which have been thoroughly developed by Indra. The secondary radar system not only detects and locates aircraft but also obtain additional information regarding identification or flight height.

Thanks to this, air traffic controllers will be supplied extensive information of a higher quality which will allow handling a larger amount of flights without detriment to standard security levels.

This technology will enhance Tunisia’s transport infrastructures and hence will be able to cope with air traffic growth due to an increase of domestic flights, tourism flow and to the country’s geographical location, which is essential in routes between Europe and Africa.

Besides the upgrading of the air surveillance network, Indra will start up a new approach control centre in the Island of Djerba. It will be equipped with the company’s Aircon system. This equipment will display the activities that occur in the air space operators are responsible for since the system integrates and shows the information supplied by radars, aircraft's flight plan as well as weather information.

The startup of the centre will boost economy dynamism by improving communications and facilitating tourist flow.

This contract reinforces Indra’s position in Mahgreb, a region that currently requires Information technologies in order to modernise its infrastructures. This, in turn, translates into commercial opportunities for the company.

In this regard, Indra is working on technological projects in Morocco, Libya or Tunisia that cover a wide array of sectors: maritime, air and railway traffic, the digitalisation of Public Administrations or the enhancement of energy management.
